AAO Copyright Workshop, March 10,
2012, 9am to 5pm
What do you know about Bill C-11, the Copyright Modernization Act?
Digital locks are in the news but did you know changes are coming for photographs?
Have you heard of the Creative Commons?
Join Ottawa Copyright Lawyer, Jordan Snel, and City of Ottawa Digital Records Archivist, John Lund, as they explore the various dimensions of copyright.
Jordan will provide the legal guide to copyright and consider how Bill C-11 changes the playing field. What are the implications for digital material? How has fair use changed?
If we want to reach our audience and provide access to researchers can we afford to be ignorant about copyright?
John will ask are their alternatives to copyright? What are the impacts of these alternatives on future donations to archives? Should archivists be advocates?
If we want to reach our audience and provide access to researchers can we afford to worry about copyright?
The Copyright workshop will take place on March 10, 2012 from 9 am to 5pm. Coffee breaks and a light lunch will be provided. Registration cost is $125 + HST for AAO members and $175 + HST for non-members. Brought to you on behalf of the Archives Association of Ontario (AAO) Professional Development Committee.
Tours of the Central Archives and Ottawa Public Library Materials Centre will be provided.

Summer is over and AAO East is back in action! Come join us for a drink at the Georgetown Pub (1159 Bank st) in the Bobby Wilson room at 5 pm on Thursday, September 8, 2011. We are looking forward to catching up with everyone after our summer break and sharing event ideas for the coming year. We hope to see you all out there!
Summer is here!
Generally, summer is the time to take it easy and enjoy the warm weather. Well, AAO Eastern Chapter executive and members have been busy and having fun!
Since the AAO East AGM in May (see posting on the Home page of this Blog), Margaret Dixon (president) attended the AAO 2011 Annual Conference held in mid-June in Thunder Bay. Also in attendance were members Brian Beaven (AAO Awards Chair) and Leah Sanders (member of the AAO Conference program committee). And AAO East member Jim Burant, was honoured with the Alexander Fraser Award—congratulations Jim! It was an exciting conference with lots of opportunities to network with other AAO members and conference attendees.
Leah kicking up her heals at Fort William.
Later in June, Rebecca Giesbrecht (member-at-large) represented AAO East at the official ceremonies and events surrounding the opening of the new City of Ottawa Archives (see posting on the Community page of this Blog). Executive members John Lund (vice-president) and Theresa Sorel (treasurer) were among the Archives staff who worked tirelessly to make the opening such a success. Way to go!
And members look out because the 2011-2012 executive held its first meeting in July to plan the events and activities for the upcoming year. Starting in the Fall, AAO East will offer a variety of social and professional development opportunities. Stay posted to the Events page of this Blog for upcoming announcements. We look forward to seeing you in the Fall!
Till then enjoy your summer!
Come out and join us for the Eastern Chapter Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Tour of the new City of Ottawa Archives on Thursday 26 May 2011 @ 7pm
